Hi. The caterpillars are poisonous. The ragwort they feed on is poisonous to livestock and all attempts are made to eradicate it. Unfortunately this has seen numbers of the cinnabar moth decline drastically. I believe a lot of other insect life depends on this plant for survival too. There we go again messing with the balance of nature ;-(

Hi. No, nothing wrong with ragwort as long as stock can’t get to eat it. There is a place for everything in nature.
I assume these caterpillars are distasteful to predators with their bright warning colors? Do they only eat ragwort?
