Sand Martin

Sand martins nest in sandy river banks or sandy coastal cliffs. The males dig burrows in the cliff and the females then turn the burrows into nest chambers. This bird had been gathering damselflies to bring back to the nest.

  1. Wow, that is a a great in-flight shot, and I know these little birds zoom around so quickly. I think we saw them every day on our trip, but I never even attempted to photograph them.

    • Thanks Sue. It was pretty difficult to track them and I wasted no end of shots. It was also so bright I couldn’t see the back of my camera properly so I didn’t realise I had captured them so well until I got the photos on screen. It was a massive colony and a spectacular sight..
